Ben Orchard-Smith
Director
Ben, where are you from? I’m Ben, originally from Yorkshire. I spent some time living in Oxfordshire before moving to Taiwan at the age of six. Eventually, I returned to the UK and settled in the Cotswolds. I have been living in London for the since 2014, which is the longest I have ever stayed in one place.
Describe your role in three words. Advising Asset Owners. I help lead the Asset Owner team here at Kontor.
An office needs…
A good coffee machine and a clutter-free environment.
Regarding design, I am particularly fond of the warehouse-style, with its exposed bricks and large windows. I have always aspired to live or work in one of those expansive New York warehouses.
As a food enthusiast, having ample lunchtime options is crucial. My preferred cuisine is Asian, which has the added benefit of being quite healthy.
Favourite office space? 55 Wells Street epitomises the New York warehouse style I admire. It features high ceilings, abundant natural light on both sides and is conveniently located in Fitzrovia. The terrace offers spectacular views, and there is an entire basement level dedicated to facilities.
Best thing about your role? Being based in London and working with some of the city's most impressive buildings across various distinctive businesses is a major draw.
Walking through some of London's most iconic boroughs and knowing I played a role in shaping specific buildings through recent deals is a particularly thrilling experience.
Top tip for any company considering a move? Focus on how your company needs to operate in the coming years and what the main drivers are for the move and base your requirements from that. Your staff are constantly evolving as is your business - your office needs to be able to do the same. Just because you don’t have any hot-desking areas or phone-booths now doesn’t mean that your staff would be more efficient without them going forward=
And finally, talk us through your weekend plans. My weekends are typically consistent, revolving around four main activities: food, drink, cycling, and a bit of relaxation.
It is important for me to have downtime, as we spend our working lives constantly engaged in activities. I enjoy the opportunity to unwind when the weekend arrives.
Clients: GPE, The Pollen Estate & The Crown Estate
