So, Gavin, where are you from? I hail from Durham. After studying in Birmingham and then a master's in real estate at Reading, I made the move to London.
I lived in Buenos Aires for three years, where I got my dog, Pedro. But later returned to London, where I now reside with my family, to head up the Kontor Acquisitions team.
Describe your role in three words. Running the team.
My role is quite varied; I oversee traditional aspects, streamline processes within the team, engage in problem-solving, handle significant deals, and mentor team members to advance in their roles.
An office needs...To represent the company’s culture—this is more important now than ever. Without a great office, people won’t want to return.
Previously, we grouped clients by industry in particular offices. Nowadays, we see two companies in the same sector using their offices in entirely different ways.
Favourite office space? I should probably say Kontor’s office, right?
The Gaslight in Fitzrovia, where Atomico, VC is based is a stunning building. Not just the art deco design outside, but the way they have designed the inside has been thoroughly thought out and perfectly executed.
Best thing about your role? Working across all areas of the company, developing others, and helping to grow the business itself.
Top tip for any company considering a move? Give yourself ample time; it always takes longer than anticipated. Rely on your internal advisors—many brands attempt to handle it themselves, but this seldom results in the best deal.
And finally, talk us through your weekend plans. With two young children and Pedro, my weekends generally involve football clubs, play parks, ice creams, and pizzas.
Our household is quite active over the weekends, with kids’ parties and football coaching. As a family, we usually dine at an Italian restaurant on Friday nights, though my favourite cuisine is probably Mexican, and I have a particular fondness for steak, influenced by my time in Argentina.
