Samantha Langton
Software Engineer & Developer
So Samantha, where are you from? I’m from Cape Town, South Africa, where I've lived for most of my life. I grew up on a farm, enjoying fresh fruit every season. I attended university in South Africa before deciding to move to the UK. My mother’s family is from here, and I wanted to experience a different way of life. The accessibility of traveling to Europe was also a major attraction. I've traded safaris for a mix of countryside and city life!
Describe your role in three words Technical, Structured, Curious.
As Kontor’s Software Engineer, my role is naturally technical, but it also provides ample opportunities to learn about various libraries and programmes.
An office needs…People!
They shape your experience. This is particularly important for me as I worked remotely in Cape Town for a long time. Being here, and interacting with the team daily, is a refreshing change.
Favourite office space? I prefer an open-plan design with plenty of space for the team to gather, engage in conversations, and bounce ideas off each other.
I enjoy the openness and the interactive element it brings. In previous jobs, teams were often in separate rooms, which felt somewhat isolating.
Best thing about your role? Learning on the job—the ability to solve problems while learning different technologies.
I also appreciate the freedom this role offers. I’m given a problem and have the autonomy to explore the best solutions for it.
And finally, talk us through your weekend plans. My weekends are quite different now compared to South Africa!
They used to involve lots of outdoor activities, local wine tasting, and meals with friends. I’m also an avid gamer, which is something that translates well here in the UK. My friends and I have a Dungeons & Dragons campaign (D&D for those familiar).
